It is pot smokers lingo for they are with you dude. The guy with the long answer takes things really seriously doesn't he? Whew!

Ignore Gurrdy. Most of his long-winded response is unfounded speculation by clueless myth-mongers.The term "420" refers to the time 4:20, which was a time designated by a group of high school youths in California to smoke marijuana. It has spread nationally since. Some people think that it refers to April 20-Hitler's birthday-but they are mistaken. Certainly "420" has come to signify Hitler to some misguided youths, but that designation is nothing more than an urban myth turned into limited reality. Other false assumptions include "420 is the penal code for marijuana," which is false, and that the Grateful Dead stayed in room 420 whereever they went. While it certainly makes "420" more interesting, the less-interesting truth is that it started in 1971 as nothing more than a group of high school kids synchronizing their doobie intake.

It means it's time to get high. But the origins of why it's that particular number is unknown. It's earlist known usage began in the 60's so don't believe any explination given to you unless it's from a true hippie. =) Especially that crap about it being a police code. In no county in the USA is the code for smoking pot '420'.
