It honestly depends on what news source you're talking about.

The cost to send journalists to Iraq is incredibly high (especially in the print media, which is going through a rough patch economically), and the situation there is incredibly unsafe for them. That limits their capability to report on what's going on over there to the best of their ability. Back home, the usual partisan politics coupled with the Bush administration's admitted reticence with the media has also made it quite difficult to paint an accurate picture of what's going on in Iraq, how we got in this mess and how we plan to dig ourselves out.

Each kind of news outlet probably does something or a few things really well about its coverage of the war in Iraq, but by no means do any of them have a complete lockdown on "all we need to know."

It's our job as responsible news consumers to understand the differences among all the media outlets (print, broadcast, Internet) and what their strengths and weaknesses are in painting an accurate picture of the situation in Iraq. Looking at all the sources as one big lump, "the MEDIA," is kind of silly because they're all independently trying to get at the truth, some with more apparent slants than others, all with various degrees of success.

Are we getting the full picture right now? Of course not. But the best way readers and viewers can get closer to that full picture is to expand their scope by reading and exposing themselves to as many credible and diverse resources as they can. Just keep an open mind, and if understanding Iraq is as important as your question seems to indicate, your dilligence and openness will reap better rewards than cynicism toward some faceless entity like the media.

NO. They really do not want the truth know. I have talked to many soldiers who have returned from Iraq and they are amazed by the lies that the news puts out.
The media only puts out the bad things and almost nothing about the good the soldiers do. This includes the marines, navy, and the air force.
I live near Ft. Lewis and Mc Cord Air Force Base so I am honored to talk to them almost weekly.

Of course not, they have become domesticated nitwits of the Bush administration ever after 9/11. Any time someone dared to question government policy, all the administration needed to do was question their patriotism in the "war on terrorism", and they would shut up.

Do you think that it has to do with the fact that the media industry in the US is owned by six companies who are regulated by the FCC, a government agency?

Absolutely not. The media is slanted by the current administration.

Obviously not!! They do not tell us all about ANYTHING IMPORTANT!! They let us know what they are allowed to let us know! That would be like asking is the government being honest with us about the fuel issues, the war itself, the budget deficit etc,,, Nobody is honest anymore nor do they tell you anything helpful!!Sorry!

probably not, because they aren't there for everything. and the american public doesn't need to know everything that goes on. there are some things that would be just fine if there wasn't so much leakage of information. all it does is get people worked up.

Well... what do you really need to know?

I ignore most of that stuff because:
1) it doesn't really affect me - and honestly it doesn't really affect you either
2) there's not much I can do to change the course of events
3) From what I've seen, there's not much I'd do differently.
