I have a broken foot. I can work, but on light duty. My doctor does not have a problem with me working on light duty. Can my boss refuse me light duty? I live in CA.
I was not injured at work.
I can not afford to go on disablity for 6 weeks to let it heal.
Does a collective bargaining agreement have any effect on this?

Our company's policy is to not allow light duty for off the job injuries. We only offer light duty if the injury happened on the job and that is so we don't have any lost time. Your company should let you used your accrued paid time off benefits in order to alleviate any financial hardship. Read your CBA and find out what your company/union agreed to regarding this.

If your employer does not feel there is a task you can perform in your present condition, there is nothing to negotiate.
Perhaps the company has a program that will allow you receive enough money to get by until you are able to work and repay the loan each paycheck.
You could always live on a credit card for six weeks as a last resort if you have no friends or family to help you.

No your boss can not refuse you light duty if he has work you can do. If this becomes a problem you may need to consult an attorney who deals with workers rights. Try the EEOC web page it may be helpful.

Of course ever state is different. I don't think your employer has to offer you light duty. Past practices mean a lot.
