An albatross is a sea bird. The expression "albatross around one's neck" comes from the 19th century Romantic poem "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coleridge. In the poem, a sailor kills an albatross, which is taboo for some reason, and as a result, his ship is cursed. He is punished by having the albatross tied around his neck. (At least, that's how I remember the poem...it's been a long time since I read it). So someone with "an albatross around his neck" is being weighed down by the consequences of his actions, and is shunned by others because of his actions.

Think a HUGE seagull. 6-8 foot wingspan. They are a source of good luck for sailors, but if you kill one you are doomed.
