They didn't. They typically wrapped a ceremonial scarf around their heads then put on a flight hat with built in earphones for use with the radio.

The air force helmet has a special spectacle for protect the eyes of the pilots. Even they meant to be dead, I think they still need it for protection, at least to reach their destinations/targets.

It's also to give them a kind of hope so they can be motivated, that they were heroes and can came back and be welcomed as a hero.

Because alot of them were pilots that were shot down and rather then be captured they tried to steer their plane to take down a target with them. Why do people keep asking this? Ok maybe you hadn't seen this but people have a habit of asking this like it is funny or a joke.
