Because the Jews needed a state (just after WWII, almost every oppressed ethnic minority in Europe was being given its independence), and Britain and the Zionist movement settled on the original homeland of the Jews (as Britain had taken over Palestine after WWI). Jews began to immigrate to the area and quickly formed a majority, declared independence, and set up a separate state.

As for the Christian Palestinians, there just aren't very many of them -- 1.2% of Israel is Christian. In Lebanon, ~40% of the population is Christian. So, it's simple: the United States supports democracy in the region, and Israel is very democratic. Also, the United States DOES support the government of Lebanon -- it's democratically-elected, and represents Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians.

One thing that a lot of people don't understand is that Israel isn't actually attacking the army of Lebanon (not that it has much of one) -- it's attacking the terrorists in Lebanon who are shooting rockets at Israeli cities. Bush has specifically warned Israel to take care that it leaves the current Lebanese government in place.

The reason we support Israel is because they have a right to exist and because they were the only democracy in the Middle East. If Israel does not exist what chance does fledgling democracy Iraq have? The plan was always to make Iraq a democracy thus causing the people of Iran to pressure their government for democracy also. This was a way of making Iran a much more stable country and therefore the Middle East much more stable. It is absolutely in our best interests for Israel to survive in the Middle East. WMDs were part of why we went into Iraq, but the main reason was to bring democracy and eventually that would stabilize the region.

Because it was not 6 million christian arabs that died in WWII. The Jews deserve a homeland. It also prooves that the US is not just Christian-supporting like so many believe.
