I'm in the process of putting in a conditioner and want to put it in vertically. My concern is that it will function as it was meant to.

You can buy a vertical window air conditioner but it will be tough to find. As to why you want or need to put it in vertically you didn't say so I assume the opening you want to put it in isn't large enough. If that is the case get one that is smaller (they come in some extremely small sizes but usually don't offer as large BTU's so it takes more time to cool a room) or take out the entire window and fit in a piece of plywood and cut out an opening so your unit fits snugly in place. I had to do this for my bedroom window. It sucks that you don't get any light this way but is convenient to replace windows in the fall when you take out the air conditioner or you could caulk it in place to seal it up and leave it permanently. Hope I was helpful.

Nope, it is just like a fridge. Gravity helps to get the lubricant that's mixed in the refrigerant to the right places. The compressor pump will probably burn out. That's why they tell you to move a fridge upright, or let it sit for awhile, before you plug it in. The refrigerant has to settle back where it has to be to properly lube that compressor pump. Or it'll run without being lubed, friction will do its thing, and it'll burn up. Also, your condensation has to drip off the cooling coil the right way to drain off or you have a mess.

Yes you can place it in a vertical position but it will not work. Read the manual that comes with it. Does a refrigerator work laying down on its side? Coolant will leak out.

NO. Window units are meant to stay horizontal. Condensation will not drain properly if the unit is on it's side.

buy a vertical unit, and sell the horizontal unit on craigslist.

it wont work....the compressor will burn out right off when all the oil runs out into the condenser coil. even if the compressor didn't burn out, the water catch pans are made to operate in the horizontal position
