I have a 1998 GMC Safari AWD. It worked fine before, but now it only has low gear and third gear. It had new fluid and a new filter installed 2 years ago. And it always has shifted funny between 1st and 2nd gear. It took a long time and made a clunking noise when it tried to shift. I think its an electrical problem, but im not sure. there is no metal in the pan. does anybody know the problem, or an honest transmission man?

If your having 1st and 2nd gear shifting problems, then I'd recomend a tranny specialist. Most likely will need to be replaced, or rebuilt. Depends on what they are going to try and sell you. Also, If you van had alot of miles on it, and did alot of towing, then I'd most likely say its in need of a rebuild.

Its your transmission that is causing the problem.

Checking the oil and changing filters is not going to help you.

Check your transmission fluid however, and then go have it checked out before it completly stops moving.
