How did you know they were ready?

2006-07-23 11:16:32 · 13 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pregnancy & Parenting Newborn & Baby

My baby is 3 1/2 months, I'm not considering it now, but maybe soon. Just curious as to when I should start. He currently takes rice cereal with his bottle (he has reflux that will probably go away when he starts solids according to his doc).

When they can sit up unassisted or in a high chair without leaning to one side or the other, then they are ready. My pediatrician said six months and to start slowly w/ rice cereal. Rice cereal, rather than mixed or whole grain, is less likely to cause a food allergy.

Then, try one new food for seven days. This way, if there's an allergic reaction it's easier to pinpoint what may have caused it...either the cereal or the food. Once you have tried a new food for seven days, then try something else for seven days until your baby has tried everything. Make sure to offer a rainbow of colors in your babies diet and NO JUICE....their little tummies can't handle it.

Also, if you introduce food, including cereal or juice, too soon in your babies diet (before 6 mo. of age) it puts your baby at higher risk for type 1 diabetes.

Good Luck and I hope that I have helped.

I started giving my son rice cereal on a spoon at 4 months, and mixed some fruit into it a couple weeks later. When he was 5 months I started him on jar food stage 1. I started with veggies first. Babies will let you know they're ready because they're still hungry after the bottle, and they "chew". All you can do is try....it may seem like a huge hassle at first, but keep working at it, and keep your camera ready...those are going to be some of the best faces and biggest messes!!!!

Good luck!!

We started our son on rice cereal when he was 2 months because just formula was too light and he couldn't hold it down. He started stage one when he was 3-4 months old. He has been eating the finger food since he was 6 months old. If it was up to him he would have started on food from the day he was born.

My doc said cereal at 3 months, vegetables at 4 months and meats at 6 months. Wait last to start fruits because they will probably like them more and not eat the meats and veggies.

when he is 4 month old plz dont do it before cause his stomach wont be ready at all..first u start with baby rice or cereal once or twice a day then a week later start with vegies like carrots, squash, fruits. u should affor him one at a time not a mix for 3-4 days to make sure he is not alleric to that kind of food.good luck

Talk to your child's pediatrician. Many doctors are now advising you to wait until AT LEAST 6 months to make sure your baby is ready. Don't rush it, all your baby needs is breast/formula for the first 6 months.

Read the below article, its VERY informative.

What kind of solids are you talking about? If you're talking baout baby food I introduced it to my baby at around 4 months but she didn't really like it! I just started giving her table food instead. Doctors dont like that you do that but it never hurt my daughter and she is one of the healthiest babies ever. How old is your baby?

I did it around 4-6 months for each of my 3 kids. I waited until they could sit up, eat sitting up, and were drinking tons of formula, showing that they were ready for more.
