I am not familiar with the games so I am not privvy to any earlier information and have not been successful in finding anything out over seaches on the internet.
The wolf's appearrance in all instances is very brief, and there is no explanation given by any character in the movie for it's appearance.

It was Aeris watching over him. I think at least. It kind of like her as in the form of a spiritual guide from native american beliefs. and it always appeared near Cloud or where he was. It chould also be as the others said too.

I have the game and I believe that the significance is that the wolf might represent Cloud's dark side, Seperoth. Seperoth is a dark part of Cloud and it haunts him to the present so the wolf might symbolize that.
