Well, if it was stolen, the FBI probably has the serial numbers on file.
PS:
Why don't you pay your bookie the $5K you owe him, eh?

Yes they will.
It's probably drug money.
I would keep it. If YOU don't the police will spend it.
I used to know a cop. He told me that money is ALWAYS stolen by a cop and they don't do anything about it.
They know, that it is drug money and the reason for iy still being there so long, is the fact, that the person or persons, that hid it there are more than likely in prison already for another offense.
Yes. Just keep it. They will not give you a reward either.
Money sitting in an evidence or lost and found room, doesn't last a day.

Imagine that this is your money, what will you feel if someone had took it and went away?you will be very sad, even if it is old, it might be important for someone or somebody lost it a long time back and it could make him feel good again, take it to the police and everyone will be happy, you will also have a great amount of money, it will differ with you, having the money when you are 100% satisfied and happy of yourself either than feeling a little bit guilty

If you're telling the truth here, yes you should notify the police. They will take it by the way. If it remains unclaimed after a certain amount of time, it will be returned to you. Call an attorney for advice and count and document the cash before you notify the cops if you choose that course.

If you call the cops they will take it and look for evidence of who it may belong to. If they see that someone was missing this exact amount they will give it to them. If they find that this was stolen from someone, they will give it to them. You may get a reward. If you report it and no one claims it, it is yours to keep. It could be counterfeit as well.
edited to say FBI is a better bet with that amount of money. That is if you were going to call the cops in the first place.

there have been people who have gotten caught, but considering you found it in a public place, (unlike those dumb guys who found it in that guys house) you haven't robbed anybody or done anything wrong. If you really want to, research the law on this for specifics: you may be able to keep it. But, if you end up going to the cops, my bet is they will probably just see if anyone claims it, and if no one does, you'll probably get to keep it.

Depends on the law of your state. You can look this up yourself. But the general rule is the authorities will keep it for a certain amount of time, say 30 days. If no one claims it, it's yours. Unless they find that it is evidence for a crime committed or something.

If they think it was 'stolen property' they will. If it is "lost" (like a wallet) i think they hold it for 6 months...and if there is nobody who claims it, then i think you get to keep it. You may want to contact a lawyer from where you live however. B/c if you take all these all these old bills to the bank, there may be questions and could it possibly be confederate bills? I dunno. Sounds suspicious to me.

I instead would call the FBI. You may get a reward, calling the local police may prove to be a problem.

Oh geez. That's a tough one. I suppose the moral answer would be to call the police and I suppose if no one claimed it, you could get it back. But truthfully, I know if it were me, I'd keep it.
