We heard the divorce rate here was like 70%. It's believable. People have been splitting around here at an unbelievable rate, especially the months right after the storm. What is it that makes so MANY people hang it up?

You need to look no further than the very forum you are on now. So many people are in unhappy marriages and they stay togther because there is no alternative, or because they fear the whole breakup process. Because of calamities such as Katrina and Rita, the devastion is so great, there is no more pretense in their lives and they simply give up or they can't take it anymore. Divorce is easier than rebuilding your life with someone you don't love, trust, or who abuses you etc. Also, there is something about horrific tragedies in general where you may learn something uncomfortable about the person you love that makes you want top leave them. Imagine a happy life with a spouse, who after the hurricane thought it was necessary to steal from the neighbors to survive, or not give help to close friends or family? Learning that a loved one becomes a bad person in times of trouble can drastically change the way you view that person. Hard times can bring out the worst in people.
One final answer may be that the tremendous stress and grief caused by the loss is simply so overwhelming, that some people can't carry on with life in general, let alone a marriage. I read a newspaper article a long time ago about a couple who lost a child. They had what they thought was a good marriage until the tragedy which took their son. After his death, they could no longer agree on anything, they weren't happy together, and they fought constantly. Unfortunately, they divorced. That too can explain they high divorce rate that you cite after the storms. Either the death of a loved one, or the storms changing the dynamic of a relationship can cause the couple to divorce. Disasters cause damage that runs deep, and for a very long, long time.

I think too many people forget "for better or for worse, for richer or poorer" too many people in marriages jump ship when the going gets too rough I cannot imagine how stressful it would be to go through a situation like the hurricanes but I think those times are when people should become stronger in their bond and support each other rather than run for it

destruction of all they had worked for all theier lives and finding that overloaded insurance companies would not pay as much as was promised or anticpated. Though marriage should not be about things -its tough to tell that to a pair of used to be well healed professional people living in a fema trailor. that kind of stress sometimes ends relationships. Im from central Louisiana. I lost my roof and two of my producing pecan trees, but many south of here lost everything, incuding the jobs they used to work at.

I imagine, it's all the added stress; it's difficult enough for many people to make their relationship work in a nice house with a nice car and nice furniture, imagine trying to make it work when everything you worked for is in ruins. People start taking it out on those closest to them, I guess.
