Google Earth will give an overview as well as a good visualisation of where your going. I often print out routes with the view at an angle before going somewhere, it's like using aGPS but real, assuming it's the aircraft and not the satellite view. Most cities are pretty well represented..

You can get a bit of an areas OS map here, but they're not as big an area as the full map:

For road routes use the AA route planner:
http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp

It's very good and will give you accurate routes, distances and times.
