Don't waste your time with Norton Anti-Virus. It has so many issues it's not even funny. You'd think since Norton SystemWorks is made by the same company that the two would be compatible but they aren't. The best AV program I've used is TrendMicro's Housecall. Best of all, it's free. You just need Java installed to use it. It's library is updated every time you use it so it will catch many problems that other AV programs won't. The only problem is that the free version doesn't run in the background like McAfee or Norton AV; you have to visit the site to run the scan. You can purchase a version of Housecall to install on your computer and that will run in the background though.

Norton came with my Sony Vaio on a trial basis. I have had it for the last two years. Its easy, no problems so far. The interface is easy to navigate, the information is updated on a regular automatic basis, the program thus far is sweet. I also the free versions of adware, spybot and windows defender. Just in case. Go with norton its a big company with IT people getting paid the most amount of money to keep systems running.

I generally do not go with the larger brands as they have more richer interfaces and excess applications which use up so much memory etc. I would stay away from Norton, McAfee etc even though I do have McAfee which I find quite annoying as it overpowers most operations.
Go for a smaller anti-virus solution such as F-Secure which my business partner says is very good.

I had Norton for 7 months. Always felt safe with it. Then two weeks ago lost my hard drive, bought new but Windows ME wouldn't reinstal;, so now have XP - so system seems quicker - is it XP over Millenium? Or is it that I don't have Norton now. I have installed BullGuard. I hope it works. But maybe will add some others. Norton always up-dated regularly.

Norton, McFee are the standards. Because they are big corporations they invest a great deal of money keeping up with and resolving solutions to viruses quicker than anyone else.
Having said that., there are a number of free programs that are very effective. Have a look at :-

In my experience I would have to say "AVG Anti-Virus"
Reports suggest it has caught more that Norton, and best of all, it is free for individual users.
It does all the automatic updates like Norton, but at no cost.

Norton is good, but they are very slow to put out protection for new threats. I used to like McAfee, but they went downhill and are just now making their way back. There is also Trend Micro PC-cillan that is ok.
Kaspersky is the best, but only for advanced users.

Norton Anti Virus is very good, I use it and I get no spam e-mails at all. In fact it's very strict, and often stops me from doing things that don't seem to be too risky ( for instance, it won't let me use msn messanger ) so I guess it depends how safe you want to be, and what you want to use the internet for.

Avast to me is the current best, as its completetly free to home users, and it has removed alot of viruses on my computer.
you can download it for free , and then you register your e-mail and you can have a full licence for a year.
I have recomended this antivirus over NOrton, which i find is a whale of a program that causes nightmares, by locking everything out.
