fire needs oxygen to burn
in a gas fire you need an air vent to start because once you've used up all the air surrounding where it's burning; its shape doesn't let it get more air, the fire will die out. see in a gas stove, the flame is only at the surface, so there's always air to use up.
Like a camp fire, since the flame is open to ambiant air, you don't need any vents.

A gas stove DOES need a air vent of some description near it - unless you want to die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Good question and your alert- A gas heater burns more gas, produces more carbon monoxide- a Gas Cook stove does the same but its not on as long, and burns a bit cleaner, read instructions on the Stove, you will find where it says, do not use for heating.
