gargoyle is the Medieval french word for "downspout" or rain Gutter"
when the great cathedrals were built they had to have a way of diverting the rainwater off of the roofs and well away from the foundations. they put stone channels along the edge of the roof line that projected out and shot the water away from the building so as not to wash out the wall foundation. to make these projections more decorative they gave them fanciful winged shapes, and had the water shooting out of their mouths so it looked liked they were spiting when it rained. they were called gargoyles because of the gurgle sound the water made as it ran out of their mouths.

I don't know who would say that Christians made gargoyles evil, but they don't seem to look up when they go into old cathedrals. Gargoyles were placed manly at the four corners of the roof to ward of evil. They are scary because they are meant to scare off demons and evil spirits. The reason they are used on haunted houses and depicted as bad in some horror movies is because they are scary looking and extremely strange. But, some movies do portray them for what they were for, one is an old TV movie about the devil trying to claim a child.(I can't remember its name) All in all, the reason for the misconception is because people tend to believe what they see on TV and what people hear without investigating it.

Actually you are right gargoyles are meant to scare off evil, look at the Notre Dame Cathedral they are all over it, gargoyles and griffins.... Its more "gothic" to have them but why not? I would love to get a large gargoyle for my house, the only problem is the nicest ones are from Design Toscana which is in Chicago and the freight would kill me...
The dork that wrote read the bible... hello bible thumping Bob that wasn't the question... get a life loser

Gargoyles serve the same function as Jack'o'lanterns that a person carves at Halloween..They're meant to be scary to frighten off evil spirits.Architecturally speaking, they were used to disguise rain spouts. Some people just don't appreciate architecture or history.Funny how some people will exclaim over the beauty of Notre Dame cathedral, decorate their lawn with plastic pink flamingos, but bug out about a sculpture.

There is nothing wrong with gargoyles. Gargoyles are seen by the ignorant as evil, but then they never met any gargoyles.

In contemporary fiction, gargoyles are typically depicted as a winged humanoid race with demonic features (generally horns, a tail, talons, and may or may not have a beak). Gargoyles can generally use their wings to fly or glide, and are often depicted as having a rocky hide, or being capable of turning into stone in one way or another, a reference to their structural roots.

yes, they are used to ward off evil spirits and are very decorative rain gutters. it's their fearsome appearance that make people believe they are evil. the medieval churches have a buttload of gargoyles hanging about. notre dame is a very good example. they are not evil. did you ever watch the show gargoyles? oh, how i miss that show....*sigh* great memories....

When I was married my dad gave me a gargoyle and told me to sleep with it by my bed along with my dream catcher. He told me that it would keep me safe from evil. My husband was a very evil man.

gargoyles aren't evil...they are supposed to be so ugly that they scare off the evil demons...that is why they are on the outside of so many old buildings. I don't really like them myself, but i sure used to sell them like crazy when i sold garden statuary!

Yes, gargoyles were once used to ford off evil! They aren't evil, they're inanimate objects.
