They are points.. as in score. If you were watching a basketball game, and they didn't keep score, what would be the purpose of playing?

Basically, you get points by answering questions and voting for/rating answers. You lose points when you ask a question or delete an answer. Higher points = higher level = higher limits as far as how many questions you can answer, etc.
