my doctor didn't put me in the hospital and break my water being dilated to a 4. I'm almost 39 weeks. Everyone I know said that their doctors broke their water even at a 2. I am hurting so bad, I'm just uncomfortable. I have only had 6 contractions over the past 18 hours. There are about a minute long but spread far apart. I just wanted to know of any reasons why the doctor won't go ahead and take her.

Oh honey I am so sorry you are so uncomfortable. Some doctors are sticklers for waiting until the mom is at least 40 weeks. It looks like you are in early labor that means your body is working toward the goal already but this can sometimes last even a few days. If you can try to get some rest tonight you are going to need it for all the work you are in for they don't call it labor for nothing. I would bet you will go into active labor tonight if not give your doctor a call in the morning and tell them that something needs to be done but I agree that if you can avoid induction do so I have had it both ways and induction is the harder of the two. Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming precious arrival

Because you aren't in labor and you and baby both seem healthy. Be GLAD that your doc isn't rushing to induce you. Inductions are harder on mom and baby than a naturally occuring labor.

Has your baby dropped? Maybe the doc feels that the head isn't far enough down? If baby's head is too far up when they break the water, the cord could prolapse. Pluse, breaking the water puts you "on the clock" to deliver. If, by any chance, you are GBS+ it could also increase the chances of passing the infection on to the baby.

Do some pelvic rocking to make yourself more comfortable and encourage baby into a better position.

Go get a massage. It will help relieve your aches and pains and balance your body. This will make labor easier when it comes.

Consider seeing a chiropractor for the same reasons.

Go get your hair cut or get your nails done. Pamper yourself. You won't have time once the baby comes.

Walk around the mall. (Might help to get baby's head engaged in the pelvis.) Have lots of sex. (Semen ripens the cervix and orgasm can cause contractions.) Use evening primrose oil capsules (EPO) to help ripen your cervix. (It won't induce labor but may help get your ready for labor.) Put two up near your cervix at night before bed. If you want, you can bust them open and rub the oil into your cervix.

Be patient. All babies DO come out eventually. They are much easier to care for while they are still in the womb.

First of all... I never had my water broken before I hit 7 cm. The midwife I am seeing for this baby, won't brake the bags at all. According to her (and she was a midwife at a local German hospital for years before going on to be an independent midwife), it's more trauma for the baby if the bag is broken. If needed, she'll open the bag after delivery, if it hasn't gone on its own.

I do know from my experience, that the contractions became VERY intense as soon as the water was broken as well. I'm looking forward to not having that extreme increase in intensity during labor!!

If you want to help your labor along.... SEX is always good, (until your water does brake at least), Both your orgasm, which helps start the contractions, and the sperm, which helps to soften the cervix will help move things along. Walking for a bit, then relaxing in a bath. One other thing, seems odd.... there is a pressure point for the uterus on the heel, below and behind the ankle bone, so get a good foot (more like heel) rub.

As for the uncomfortable, I feel for you... I'm 36 weeks along myself, and the hot weather here in Germany is miserable!!!

Thank your lucky stars that your doc has not induced you! I was at a 2, with ruptured membranes and was given Cervadil and Pitocin to bring on the labor. TWO DAYS later, I had my baby. Trust me honey, you do not want to put your body or your baby through that. Try walking and nipple stimulation to really bring on those contractions. When your contractions come on fully start timing them. A good rule of thumb both my OB/GYN's told me was the 4-1-1 rule: contractions 4 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute for 1 hour. Hope it helps.

If your contractions aren't close enough together for delivery to be pretty eminent they won't break your water also if the baby's head isn't far enough down a lot of docs won't. The amniotic sac keeps the baby protected from bacteria outside the womb and helps prevent cord compression. Walk through your contractions, try nipple stimulation and see if your contractions get closer together. Good luck and congrats.

you're just not ready yet. I know that's the last thing you want to hear, I've been there and can certainly sympathize. 39 weeks is a very uncomfy time.

You might not be completely effaced. Let things go as naturally as possible. You still aren't at your due date, you could be in pre-labor for another week.

Evening primrose oil can help you get effaced, and sex, as was mentioned before, helps too. Good luck!
