I don't and never would. If you aren't proud of being from America you should move out.

I don't really hide it but I certainly do not advertise the fact I am from the US. I always try to learn as much about the language, culture and everything I can not to stick out. Because most of the time Americans are considered inconsiderate when they do visit other countries because the resistance to the way things are done, how people talk, or go about their daily life. I want the people I meet when I visit another country to know that I am there to appreciate their culture and the people.

i will soon be one but I am Nigerian grew up in Turkey and moved to MD when I was seven my accent will never change nobody can figure out if it is Nigerian, Jamaican, Turkish or American, and I doubt too many can fake their voice. When I visit home I will use my Nigerian passport other than that nobody needs to know where you are from. My sisters have accents that would not suggest Nigerian it is strange. The best way is to not offend others when abroad or stick for America without arrogance.

Whenever i see an American acting rude or stupid, I do not spread the fact that I am a fellow countryman. I also do pretend to be from Canada under certain situations and it has saved my butt a couple of times. I am female and travel alone a lot to other countries. Face it we piss a lot of people off. This also has nothing to do with being proud of my country blah blah blah. It has to do with safety like the the topic of this travel section "Health and Safety"".

Too bad some Americans have made such obnoxious fools of themselves that everyday Americans can't travel in peace. I'd say anymore you just lie low and try to show respect and courtesy. Which was the bigger a$$ - soccerqt's friend or the German who flipped him off?

Nope. I've found that most people are quite nice everywhere I've been. I have a southern drawl and that alone grabs attention and seems to make people ask me where I'm from and start asking me questions. I will get asked about politics in pubs, etc. but most people are just curious about how ordinary Americans perceive their own government.

Yes, I would. There is to much conflict....and I dont want to be known as one of those "stupid americans." It's important to respect the customs and traditions of other countries. When traveling, I dont wear anything that would make me stand out as an american...ie the american flag on a T-shirt... Just simple classic clothes.

I travel to Europe a lot, and I never flaunt the fact that I'm from the US. It has nothing to do with being proud of being American (like one moron posted earlier), it has to do with being hated by much of the world. It's better to be keep a low profile than to be beaten or blown up by someone who hates America.

Tracy T said it best. The United States government is doing things in our name that are illegal and immoral. People are suffering because of it and are resentful. Going to a country that has some hostility towards us and then letting everyone know that you are from the U.S. is not a smart or safe move. We know that our president is evil and don't support him, but they don't.

No I don't try to hide the fact. I usually wear something with an American flag on it, and some times I wear a hat that has an eagle, globe and anchor on it that reads. "I travel to exotic foreign lands, meet interesting people, and kill them". Noone's bothered me yet.

I try to blend in as much as possible with the locals. Doesn't always work, but I do try. If someone asked me where I was from, I would say I was from the U.S.
Unless, of course, there were anti-American protests. Then I'm Canadian.
