Sometimes the doctor will give you an episiotomy and it does sting but with all that was going on I just felt a really quick intense burn then on with the labor. With a tear, I too have had both, it felt pretty much the same. I think it depends on the doctor how frequently he does episiotomies if you definitely don't want one talk to him/her well in advance you don't want to be making any decisions you can avoid during labor. I think I found the healing much more uncomfortable than the actual tear. I was worried about infection but I was fine. Hope everything goes fine congratulations on your new baby.

Don't consent to an episiotomy unless you or the baby is in jeopardy. There is no reason. Episotomies should be for emergencies only. A cut is likely to be bigger than a tear.

Think of it this way.....
If you have a piece of fabric and you pull on it to tear it, it's difficult to do so. If you cut it with scissors a little and then pull on it, it will rip a lot and rather easily. You weakened it when you cut it. Your perineum is the same way. If you leave it alone you *might* get a small tear. The tear will happen against the pressure of the head and you will most likely not feel it. It will most likely only involve skin, not muscle. If you let the doctor cut you, it is likely to be bigger than a tear and will definately extend into the muscle. Damaged muscle makes for longer healing time. AND the cut could extend into a tear.

A cut is quicker for the doctor to repair, but a tear is easier to put back together where all the pieces came from. Think of it like a jigsaw puzzle. Two pieces with flat sides can be difficult to line up perfectly. Two pieces with unique sides are very easy to fit back together the way that they were.

You can do a lot to help prevent an episiotomy or a cut even becoming an issue. Do perineal massage during pregnancy. Stay active in labor. DO NOT push flat on your back. Squatting widens your pelvic outlet something like 25 or 30%! Don't push if you don't feel the urge to push. Request warm compresses to be used on your perineum. Consider waterbirthing. (I had a second degree tear with my "land" birth and perfectly intact perineums with my 2 waterbirths! BTW...I was unmedicated and had no idea that I had torn until my doula told me afterwards when the doctor got ready to sew me up! I had lidocaine for the repair.)

Talk to your caregiver about how s/he will support you during labor to help you avoid a cut or a tear. If s/he says that "all first time moms need cut" then you need to find a new caregiver because that is outdated and untrue!

Mine was sore afterwards nothing too bad though, didn't feel a damn thing durring the actual delivery other than pressure, THANK YOU EPIDURAL!, but from what I've been told from friends who have done naturaly child birth by the time that happens you have a pain blocking mechanism naturally in place and you don't really feel it, do I beleive them.... naah, hence the reason I will have an epidural again. A lot of docs also inject a local antistestic to the episiotomy site.

No, with everything going on, you won't notice it. You may notice a prick or a sting from the local anesthetic your doctor may use. Further advice, talk to your doc about not cutting you! Ask him or her to let you tear-you will heal much better. I have had two children vaginally and 1 with and episiotomy and 1 without. The healing process was far less painless with the second because of the lack of stiches. Something to think about.

I had an epidural so it didn't hurt but I have had both an episiotomy and a tear and the tear was less painful healing than the episiotomy was.

I got an episiotomy with my first and then tore with the second 2. I would rather much tear then be cut. But yes it does hurt. Not so much when oyu are getting it done because you are already in so much pain. BUt after if you get more then 2 stiches it is very umcomfortable. It burns, then aches, then tiches down there when you are healing. But of coarse it is all worth it.

Actually the doctor doesn't tear you the baby's head does. If you've been properly numbed in the area it realy doesn't hurt until after and then it's not to bad!

In medical college they had to take notes incredibly quickly. becoming a doctor isn't that easy now, the fee of their writing messep up their handwriting and that they do no longer care approximately it after becoming a doctor.
