50ish years ago, President Eisenhower said that if the American goverment evacuates you from a war torn country, you owe the American goverment $150. It is still a law on the books today. We are evacuting citizens who are retardedly living in one the most dangerous countries on the planet and not charging them for it when it predictably gets more dangerous there. Why do I have to pay my taxes and fees to government every year but they get this one free on me and my taxes?

Seems like someone would have to be a complete idiot to leave the USA and go to a place that has been one of the most dangerous on this planet for most of my 30+ years on this planet.
But that's typical, people don't believe they should have to be responsible for their own actions anymore, they feel the US should bail them out of whatever they get into.
Actually, I beleive there was some talk about charging the people in lebanon to get on the cruise ship that was going there to evacuate the people. I saw this on CNN and they were implying that the people should not be charged...naturally. I would like to add to your point though... The rescuers are having to unnecessarily put themselves into harms way to evacuate these people. And for that, I believe the cost should be way more than $150 a person, or even more than $1500.
Just because I feel like ranting a little more, I'm a single male with no dependents. roughly 20% of my earnings is taken from my checks. to put that in perspective, if I work monday through friday, one of those 5 days I did not make a cent for myself.

Simply put, because it is the right thing to do. You never know when you are going to be in jam, needing rescue. Would you want people to pass judgment on you before they lend a helping hand? I don't think so. You and I might not choose to go to Lebanon, but they did, for whatever reason. When they went they could not have known war would break out. And if we don't help them they'll be stuck there, possibly end up being killed. I'm glad the US government stepped in to evacuate our citizens. God bless our soldiers who helped with the evacuation; the airline that only charged a dollar a piece for the flight, the cruise ships picking up passengers, etc.

I agree 100%. And adding insult to injury, the media interviewed a few of the student evacuee's and you should have heard the whining, and Bush bashing. Talking about it took too long; too many flies; too crowded; too many families with kids; it took too long to get food (2 hours); other countries got there sooner; and one female brat student compared it to Katrina.

Nobody forced these people to go there and everyone knows the violence in the middleeast, especially near Israel. I am mad that my tax dollars are wasted on evacuating these ingrates. This is the 1st Condi Rice decision I disagree with.

Why are Americans so greedy as to complain about the cost of evacuating a few thousand american citizens who are in desperate trouble, does it make you feel better that the government of USA gave 90 billion dollars lto Israel ast year to help fund this problem.

Because they do not have the luxury or freedom we have so it's only fair that out of the goodness of our hearts that we do the right thing and help them in any way possible.
