Reinstalling the operating system is the best bet. If you have Windows XP you will want to make sure that there are no FAT 32 files put onto it after you install Windows XP. XP I have learned only recently has a different file system (NTFS) than all previous incarnations of windows and while much of the old software like Word and other such programs out there have Fat 32 file systems and Will work on an xp system for a while, eventually you will have huge problems and headaches from a computer that doesn't know who it is. A complete zero out of the computer operating system is best to assure proper installation. Go into the bios and reconfigure it to read the cd rom drive BEFORE it reads the Hard drive of the unit. Once this is done insert your Windows operating system disk into the cd rom drive and turn off the system completely. Then turn it on. When it begins to boot up it will read the disk in the drive first and it will ask you questions as to how you want to proceed. Answer the questions so that your old system is completely overwritten. The disk will reformat your hard drive and wipe all previous info off the hard drive and then Windows will reinstall. It is not hard to do but it does take a while to accomplish! Remember that when you are done the only thing that the laptop will know that it knew before is what is contained in the bios! Once you are all done, you can reenter the bios and reconfigure the order it reads the drives so that it will no longer read the cd rom drive first before the hard drive. Once you have done all this be sure to go to Windows Update and download any new version fixes or hot fixes that have come out since your Windows disk was created. Once those are in you are done and have a brand new computer all your own.

Did you try just hitting ENTER without a password??

Also if you try booting from your OS Disk like XP it should start to format the hard drive and re-install a fresh version.
You may have to hold down F8, instructions will follow, or it will ask you, or it could just start inspecting the systems hardware etc. DOS information below for laptops.

Hope this helps.

I would suggest that you buy your own Windows and install it. And you shouldn't have bought a used laptop. These days you can get laptops at very low prices.
