I think it is because of it being a famous resort, and the rich go there to be in paradise. Many rich people move there because they like what they saw, and I would say that their servants don't make much money.

My sister lives in Las Vegas, and she said that most of the people who live there make minimum wage or a little higher; except those who work in the casinos there.

It is the same in Maryland where I live. Many rich people come to live here because of the beautiful scenery and they have good restaurants and places to keep their boats and to build their mansions, but the general area here is low paying.

I think that people getting enough money to leave there is only by scrimping and saving up enough to get a plane or a ship fare. Then they move other places and find the same thing. If I were poor but living in Hawaii, why would I leave? I am already in a place with paradisaic conditions. I would be content to live there in a paradise and have low pay then to move and live in a ghetto someplace and still have minimum wage jobs.

not all salaries are low --- Hawaii is still a major tourist spot ---the big bucks come from wealthier people from other places(many have homes there) --- so much stuff is imported to Hawaii and that's not cheap --- if tourist keep paying out the dollars for the products and services - the business folks are going to keep the prices higher in certain areas of Hawaii due to the preferences of the tourist.

It's because tourism is the only source of income on the islands. This implies two parallel economies. I'ts the same situation in all the countries living off tourism. Local people have low level education and low level incomes. Tourists have money and the price for goods and services are based on their buying power.

The cost of living is so high because alot has to be shipped there, driving the cost of goods up. When I was on vacation there a taxi driver made some comments regarding this subject. I remember him saying that to him to live in paradise was worth it and compensated for the high cost of living. It is a beautiful place.

There are the rich and their servants. Servants always live in squalor. The big difference from Hawaii and anywhere else is people don't mind living in squalor because they live in Hawaii. If I had time to surf those ways I might not mind living in a cockroach infested whole in the wall.

Because noone is doing anything to change or improve that. Many people work 2-3 jobs there to survive or share a place with other people... Some have relatives or families there so they live with them...

Well, I don't know how people afford to live there who aren't already rich, but islands tend to be very expensive to live on, because so much has to be flown in from other places, like building materials and foods.

People are desperate to work there so there are too many workers for the jobs-- supply and demand!

Move to North Korea -- Not the same problems there!
