Hahah, I agree with the person above me who suggested rats, but they aren't for everyone so it's your choice. They're more social than hamsters, but as a trade off they take a bit more work and a larger cage.
I would read up a bit more on all sorts of small animals. Many people start with a hamster because it's so common, but I find that they're more temper mental and enjoy food and sleeping more than your company. Hamsters are a very low maintenance pet but, once again, there's a trade off- they're also less social. If you're not home often or just generally don't have too much time, then a hamster is probably a better choice.
In between there's also mice and gerbils. Mice are closer to hamsters (strange that I say that they're closer to hamsters then rats eh?) in that they're more of a watching pet and, although they can be tamed, they still prefer less handling than many animals. Gerbils can be very social (if you get one, make sure you get it a same-sex friend too) and also require little work. They produce less waste than most small animals too, which is nice, and seem to have the least amount of odor. They can also usually live in a cage suited for hamsters.
If you do decide to get a hamster still, I would recommend one of the common types found in stores, such as a golden, short haired, teddybear, or long haired one. Many of those names are used interchangeably in the pet trade, but you should be able to figure out what I mean when you see them. Russian hamsters, aka Dwarf Hamsters, take much more work to tame and can be quite agressive.

teddy bear hamster (big a fluffy kind). Get a golden one and name her Honey Drop.
Fluffy is a classic too...
Or you could get a black one and call her Amaris.. it means child of the moon if I remember right... The huge sack on the male rodents always bothered me when I had hamsters and mice, lol Oh, and a black hamster would probably be kinda rare cause I haven't seen one before. If you get a female, make sure it isn't in with male hamsters if you don't want babies.

Teddy bear hamster are really cute and fun! We had one name Beary and another one named Teddy. If your a first time "user" i would suggest looking up facts online because hamsters are very sensible and not very resiliant. They mean seem dipensible to some people but those little guys brought us a lot of joy and fun! Enjoy it!!!!

seriously....get a rat!!! No No ...hear me out...they are the neatest small animal ever to have a pet for. They are the cleanest, SOCIALBLE(even socialable with you!!!), smartest, and so lovable little things. When I first got the rat for my daughter...I thought I was going to die!! I told her over my dead body we were going to have one....we ended up having 3 of them....they were the best pets we ever got next to dogs!! They will follow you everywhere you go....learn tricks, and even play peek-a-boo or hide-a seek games with you. They even give you kisses like a dog does...by licking you....to feel a rat's little toungue licking you is the cutest ever!!!! They even have a sound to let you know they are happy or they love ya....by "bruxing" is what you call it. Just like a cat purrs, they brux...what they do is they grind their teeth realllly loud...and their little eyes wiggle....really!!!! I am not kidding!! They are sooooo cute. I grew up with hamsters...and that was what my daughter wanted at first until my husband talked her into getting a rat...before I okayed it...I did a lot of research on line...and found so much information about it so I decided to give it a try. That was the best choice I made over a hamster. Hamsters are hard to socialize like you can with a dog or a cat...and you don't have any way of knowing if they are happy like a cat's purr or a rat's brux. They sleep alllllll the time. Rats do too but if you were to show up...and quietly say hi to them....they most of the time will wake up just so that they can be witih you. They rather be with you on your shoulder or arms or even in your big pockets....than to be in a cage. so Think about it.....check it out online....I think they are much more fun than hamsters!!!! Plus you will have a much better time naming the rat based on their personality than a hamster. Like I said we had three of them...the first one had the most beautiful ruby color eyes we had ever seen...it wasn't like pink red...it was totally ruby...and she was a mink hooded rat....so we named her ruby...and her sister, also a mink hooded rat...we named her sapphire...she was very daring...and then our third one was a beautiful shiny silvery black one...reminded me of a black pearl. thus Pearl was her name...and we considered them our "Gems"....Ruby, Sapphire, & Pearl.
My hamster's name was snoopy....all three of them after I would loose one...the new one was named after the Snoopy before....I don't remember what kind of hamster it was though...I know it was two different colored and puffy like a teddy bear.

teddy bear hamsters and get it while it is a baby. It is a good way to get used to each other and grow together. They are good because they are cute and not as scary at first. Name it whatever you want after all it is yours.

u shouldnt use hampsters, thats not nice. but they all r pretty much the same aside from color and fur type. they sleep most of the day, hord and hide the food, must change the bedding at least three times a week, fresh water(change daily), something to chew on; if u plan on gettin sleep, put them in another room. they like to make noise at night
i had two, male(name Chance) and female(Roxy), had six babies. sold the babies (didnt name)
