median family income in the US is $44,473 (this is based on a 3 year average so it doesn't correspond correctly below)

the “median income” means that that is the income level in the exact middle of all families. In other words, half the families make more and half make less
Here’s another way to look at it.
The poorest 20% of families make less then $24,780
The next 20% makes between $24,780 and $43,400
The next 20% makes between $43,400 and $65,828
The next 20% makes between $65,828 and $88,030
The richest 20% make over $100,000
The top 5% in the country make $173,640
