A smithereen is defined as a small peice. Although the word is only used in the plural, " smithereens" as it describes the destruction or breaking apart of something.

The answer to this question took some thought.... but then I realized that the smithereens were one of my favorite all time new wave bands...

It just means a small fragment or a splinter. If a cup shatters into smithereens, it means a very great many wee pieces, rather than a couple or three pieces.

smashed to smithereens...it means broken down to unrecognizable sized pieces. So, I guess a smithereen would be pretty small.

As a rule they are quite small, also there are generally alot of them hence the expression" smashed into smithereens"
