or do you believe it's inside each and every one of us, and that it's our journey here on earth to ultimately find it?

Doesn't it seem that too many of us search for true happiness in "things", and that it's actually there all the time, in each and every one of us, only we must search for it within?

I'm referring to happiness that is completely seperate from another human being, relationship, goal, job, etc.

Please replace the above word "seperate", with "independent".

What a great question. I think that a person cannot be happy unless they let themselves. True happiness is merely a state of grace. The older I become the more I realize that external forces may distract my happiness or they may encourage my happiness...but true happiness is deep inside.

Temporary happiness can be found in outer things but that is only as long as the "thrill" lasts with the object. When the excitement wears off it's on to another new thing and so on. You could put a person in a tropical paradise and if they don't have the happiness within they'd be complaining about the sun being too bright or the mosquitoes are bothersome or whatever!
I believe that outer things can provide comfort and even some happiness but the only true happiness comes from understanding and accepting and loving all of ourselves. Loving all the parts and spreading that acceptance and love to everything and everyone who comes across our path is a joy that transcends temporary happiness.
I think it is our journey to find that source of happiness. Some people I know have that inner happiness and even have careers doing what they love. Lucky devils! :))

True or lasting happiness can never be found outside of ourselves, here are some examples of what you may TRY to find true happiness in:
1) your job -- it can be lost
2) your lover, spouse, children or family -- may pass away at anytime due to illness or accidents, etc
3) Your precious physical possessions can be stolen, burned up or lost.
Nothing in the outside world is completely safe from being lost to you due to some circumstance that is beyond your control. Therefore, it's best to maintain an attitude of I'll enjoy what i have--for as long as i have it and if it is taken away, i will not lose my equilibrium but instead hold onto my increasing INNER peace, happiness and joy...the search for true happiness starts and is only found within ourselves.

I think "happiness" is just a moralistic word for the feeling of power. I think happiness is contentedness with the amount of power that has been attained. What all ascending life, however, wants, is;
"Not contentedness but more power; not peace but war; not virtue but prowess (virtue in the Renaissance-style, virtù, moraline-free virtue)."
[Nietzsche, The Antichrist(ian), section 2.]
Happiness is nice, but it soon fails to satisfy. We want more, or rather...
"More! More! is the cry of a mistaken soul: less than All cannot satisfy Man."
[William Blake, There Is No Natural Religion.]
We want All.

Happiness is a decision. You decide to be happy with your life, your self, your work, etc. or not. it is not what happens to us or in us... it is how we react to it that matters.
Based on the reaction we choose to have to our surroundings and the events in our lives we decide to be happy or not.
The reaction we decide to have in advance to the events in our lives is almost like a Standard Operational Procedure. If we have made a decision to be happy when we wake up every morning in advance because we WOKE UP and many others DIDN'T then no matter how we feel in the morning we will be happy because we woke up and that beats the alternative.

If you are egocentric, look for happiness within. You will enjoy an unfufilling journey of mental masterbation.
If you are not egocentric, look for happiness outside yourself. You will achieve your ends when you find goodness out there and then are able to bring it back within you. Education is a example of this process. Unfortunetly most people are too egocentric to enjoy it.

We are what we live. There is not that difference between what we are and do and the environment. Happiness maybe the balance on what we want to do and what we really can do, in a perspective that we are sensible of living our lives as result of our choices. To do what we don't want to take, to love who we don't want to, to work with there's nothing about us... Oh, Gosh, it's Hell !
Take a chance to live what we trust who we are, at that moment, because the world keeps going 'round and 'round. This is the time for THE HAPPINESS. Take your blue train!
