A disaster when something horrible happens like when a car is in an accident and kills the driver and takes out a light post. That is a disaster.
A catastrophe is when that said driver dies, knocks the light post which ends up killing a couple of people, which ends up knocking down a wire, which starts a fire that burns down the building killing a lot of innocent people and leaving the rest homeless which then, the car, explodes, setting fire to some trees, knocking power out to its customers and so forth.
You see, THAT is a catastrophe. Every single thing bad that that can happen to the horrids of just one thing (the car accident) ends up hurting every and anyone in its path.
I hope this helps you.

A disaster (from Latin meaning, "bad star") is the impact of a natural or man-made hazard that negatively affects society or environment. Disasters occur when hazards strikes in vulnerable areas. The word's roots is from astrology and imply that when the stars are in a bad position, a bad event is about to happen.

While Catastrophe is disaster, sometimes used to mean an unusually severe disaste.

Um, no easy way to seperate the 2 but i'll try by example.

If you spill a drink all over your pc and it stops working, it's a disaster. If it's got stuff on it that you urgently need for work purposes etc, then it's a catastrophe!
Apply that to a bigger scenario.....

Hope that helps

It's really quite simple. In a disaster, someone dies. In a catastrophe, something just gets wrecked, but there's no death.
