When I'm at home I hook my laptop up to an external monitor. The problem is that when I close the laptop lid the laptop goes into "sleep mode". How do I stop this from happening?

I have a Dell Latitude D610 and I'm running XP

Go to START then Control Panels. Then click on Power Options and then from the ADVANCED tab, you can change your option there for when your lid closes. Set it to "Do Nothing" when you close the lid and it wont shut off. Its a power management way of handling you closing your lid so you might want to at least set the options for when your computer is idle or else your battery or your adapter will just wear out.

You might want to invest in a docking system so that you have more control over your laptop with it closed.

I have a dell too. In addition to be able to change what happens when you close the laptop, you can completly switch monitors.

Go to Start>Control Panel>(on the left click switch to classic view, if however it says switch to category view, do nothing)>Power Options>Advanced(tab)>change when I close portable lid to do nothing.

You can also switch monitors complelty. I have a dell inspiron 4100 laptop on XP and use an external monitor and find that this works better. In contorl panel, click display>settings(tab)>advanced>display(tab)>turn the second monitor to primary(circle instead of two boxes>turn off the laptop screen

Now, every time you turn on the laptop each time it will only use the 2nd screen, which is easier and quicker
