Dual core essentially gives you two processor cores to process things. You can more efficiently run two CPU hogging programs at the same time without much of a performance hit on either of them.

If I were building or buying a system right now I would completely ignore the solo systems. (I just bought a new laptop - Dual Core)

You will see better performance overall with a dual core system.

Dual is better for active pc users. However for my parents, or girlfriend for example, i would recomend nothing more than a single core. Why? Because all they do on the pc is read email, and browse the web. Maybe listen to mp3s or look at a few pictures.

If the price is close, then go dual. If you do alot of editing, video playback, or anything you guiess to be more intensive than casual pc use, go dual. Otherwise single core may be all you need.
