For example: We say Italy, they say Italia. To us? Japan. They say Nihon or Nippon. Never made any sense to me. Stupid question I know, really stupid answers are welcome.

I have no idea why we rename countries in english. How we got Japan from Nihon is baffling! Same goes for getting Germany from Deutschland.

Americans try to speak foreign words the best they can. Of course, native speakers of a language use the proper lingua of their locale, having being brought up in it. Non- native speakers may not use the proper grammatical pronunciation, but they try to say the word at their best, without being derogatory.

It happens in other places too - in Frech Germany, Deutschland is Allemande.
It's a language thing.

that is so funny, don't know, but when the Spanish news is on TV, they say names and stuff in perfect American English, right in the middle of all that Spanish

different countries use different languages...if everything was going to be pronounced the same by everyone, wouldnt everyone just be speaking the same language???
the whole world speaking one language would just be lame...all culture would be lost.
