20year old plant now spindly producing very small leaves

I think it needs a very drastic re-pot and new compost. Spread newspapers on the floor round the plant, and lift the root out of the pot onto the paper. Scratch gently at the compacted roots with something like a wooden spoon, which will not break the roots, and pull out some of the old compost if you can. Take a pot a good 50% bigger than the one you have, put gravel in the base for drainage, then line the sides with new compost; if you dampen it first, it will stay in place. Lower the plant down into the pot, and making sure it is upright, fill in the gaps down the side of the pot with more new compost. Give the plant a really good water overnight using Phostrogen plant food (pour away any excess water in the morning) and your plant should pick up. Dont stand it in full sunshine, or near a radiator, but make sure in winter months that it has plenty of light.....and FEED IT!! Good luck
