It's the American Dream, isn't it. Yeah right! This is a difficult question I guess the answer is that we get barraged with tons of advertisements every day that says buy this, eat here, people will like you. But then you go to that place and the workers there are pricks and the people there aren't your type and they go through it everyday so they think that this is what you do to be liked, except the people that like you, you don't like. I can't stand all of that stuff I buy what I want if I have the cash and if I don't then I can't have the item. I got wrapped up in that for awhile but then I wised up and now I am feeling better about not doing it because it is pretty much a fad if you think about it to be in debt is the new fad, and first thing I don't like fads, second I like to have money when possible instead of giving it all to credit card companies and whatever else you use credit for.

They like to keep up with the Jones. Even though there is no cash involved in this this is perfect example. I live in Suburbia so the houses are fairly close. The minute one guy goes out in the morning and starts mowing his lawn you'll start to hear all the other lawn mowers going to. Why? Because one guy can't stand the fact that the neighbors lawn is better than his (Yes I include my own husband in this...).

Because a lot of people think that they will be judged on what they have, rather than on who they are. These people are basically insecure and lack proper values. Truly secure people, who know who they are and have their values firmly in position, have no need for this over-consumption.
This is an excellent question by the way.

Great question. That was the basic question in the movie Fight Club. Those things do not bring meaning to life.

Because society tells us we have to. We live in an age of consumerism where spending your money is the way to happiness.
