Best guess is a stand in for "For God's sake" or "for Chrissakes" either of which would be blasphemous in older religious circles. Not sure there is a tie in to St. Peter. The term started showing up in the 1920s. Earlier, for the love of Pete, for the love of Mike and similar terms could be found in print.

The phrase, "for pete's sake", is thought to have originated in medieval times. It was an exclamation phrase from For Saint Peter's sake. These phrases are called minced oaths, where a less offensive phrase is used to avoid using the Lord's name in vain.

St. Peter. It's kind of like "for Christ's sake" but taken down to the level of Apostle.
