I recently installed some new RAM (512 MB) for my Apple Power Mac G4 (733mHz). THe computer worked fine, the RAM even showed up in the system profiler. Within minutes, the computer froze. Now everytime i start up it sits and spins on "Login Window Startup". I tried taking out the new RAM and the same thing happens. Is there anything I can do? When I search "Login Window Startup" I get alot of results about Macs getting stuck there, too. But nothing mentions RAM. It also goes beyond my knowledge. I was going to try and startup from the OS Disc, but I can't even get the CD tray open. THere isn't that tiny button I can access with a paper clip.

Any pointers I can get would be appreciated. I may not know alot about this kinda stuff, but I can RTFM. I just need to know where to start.

Many Thanks!!!

Put the original ram back in the computer without the new ram. if you pc runs fine with old ram, then either then new ram is bad (happens all the time) or you don't have the correct ram that your pc can use.

Try starting your computer up in Safe Mode. Make sure the new RAM is installed CORRECTLY in the computer, and start it up in safe mode...yes, Mac OS X DOES have a safe mode. After you have restarted in safe mode and it works, try restarting the computer again not in safe mode. If it still gets stuck, you may need to reinstall the operating system I hope this helped! Good luck!

To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:

Be sure the computer is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

Wow. With Windows, Installed ram is detected, and working without even a restart.

Looks like your Mac cant communicate with the Ram like Windows can.

Sorry.

Did you reset the little switch on the main logic board?

It is a really small rubber topped metal pad, that you only press once!. Located near the rear corner of the bottom of the main logic board. After installing new components on the mail logic board, this resets it.

That is the only quick solution other than what another person already mentioned, that your RAM is the wrong type, or, you handled it without your wearing an anti-static ESD wrist strap!
