A lot of people have recommended Toyota, but for some reason I can't stand those. There is no reason behind this, but I could never own one.

Any other suggestions?

I just wanted to clarify, this is my first "brand new" car. I've had used cars before, but now I am going to buy one new.

No one else realized you said this would be your FIRST car. So I think of this: reliability, PROTECTION, inexpensive and easy to drive.
Here are my recommendations:
1990's Buick Roadmaster, Chevy Caprice/Impala.
1994 or newer Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis
All of these vehicles have a full frame and are built to last. Also, there are tons of them out there, mostly driven by older people who take care of them so you can get one with less than 60k miles and in good shape for about $5,000. I've seen examples of all these cars lasting upwards of 400k miles (when taken care of). They all also come with a V-8 so you can have some fun when you want too. AND they have room to comfortably seat 4-5 people so you can get lots of fellas together and go somewhere, or just take one special person in the backseat ;)
Thats what big, comfy and reliable American cars are all about.

Don't get a "Throw away" car...you know the ugly 80's cars that looks like boxes? Save up your money for something good. The thing about cars these days is that a new model seems to come out every day. Pick something that has good miles/kms to the gallon, something that suits your needs and something that is practical for you.

Heck, I drive a 1970 VW bug, couldn't be happier!

Kia? Hyundai? Well if you want something reliable then yeah toyotas are very reliable LOL sorry but so are hondas and nissans- but it all depends on how much you are willing to spend (like if you are getting used or new, and if you are getting used then how much mileage and everything - if you get an american used car then get as little mileage as you can afford....if you are getting a non american car like toyota, nissan, or honda, then dont get anything over $50,000-$60,000 miles)

i would suggest getting a used car. just be patient and you will find a "barely used" 2 yr old and you'll spend half the cash you're looking at investing now! most new cars will lose half their value in the first two years, while you pay for 25% of the car. now, if you're dealing in all cash that's another story and i just wasted a bunch of time typing.
if you want low maintenance and $/mile-ya gotta go with an import-nissan would be my suggestion.
