NYC will NOT host the Olympics.
Aside from that, since there are various calendars in the world, I wouldn't be tied to one date or one year.
Remember1999-2000; nothing happened.
Remember 06-06-06; nothing happened.
The Jewish calendar, the Chineses calendar are different from ours. Their 2012 happened already - with no ill effects.

It's got nothing to do with being awake.
On 12-21-2012, at dawn, there is a once-in 26,000 year alignment between the Sun and the Milky Way. To the ancient Maya,this alignment signified the start of a new world age. (NOT an ending.)
The Mayan calendar doesn't end this day. No meteors are scheduled to hit. Just the sun being reborn.
