The British Petroleum Statistical Review of World Energy reports oil reserves for the entire world on a country and regional basis. For oil the ranking at the end of 2005 was:
1. Saudi Arabia: 264.3 billion barrels of oil
2. Iran: 137.5 billion bbl
3. Iraq: 115 billion bbl
This is probably the most authoritative and recent source for this data. If you use the Energy Information Administration data, which includes Canadian tar sands in their oil reserves, the ranking is:
1.Saudi Arabia 264 Bbbl
2. Canada 178.8 Bbbl
3. Iran 132.5 Bbbl
4. Iraq 115.0 Bbbl

For natural gas the ranking is:
1. Russian Federation: 1688 Trillion cubic feet
2. Iran: 943 TCF
3. Quatar: 910 TCF
For coal:
1. USA: 246,643 million tonnes

3. China: 114,500 million tonnes

For unconventional reserves, such as tar sands, Venezuela may have the largest reserves. Venezuela reports 1.2 TRILLION barrels in heavy oil and tar sands. How reliable that is may be uncertain. Canada reports 174 billion barrels of their total as oil in tar sands, which are normally not considered conventional oil.

It depends on what price you are talking.
Canada has the world's largest reserves of oil at today's prices and technology. If the price goes to say $200/barrel and new technology is developed, there are some very large reserves in shales in Wyoming and Colorado.

If you're talking proven reserves, this is true. But many are speculating that oil fields in venezuala and Iran may be even bigger.

nope...you're thinking of Iran...you were close though...Iran has about 1500 untapped oil wells...so technically...Iran has the second largest...even though its still in the ground..lol
