I prefer applicator, I find them easier to insert, less messy and you know you have them in far enough if you use an applicator, as I personally never get it in comfortably 'manually'.

Health wise you are on safe ground with any commercially manufactured tampon in the US. The FDA sets the absorbency guidelines. Deodarant tampons however are NOT necessary and can, in some cases, lead to issues.

using an applicator makes it easier to insert the tampon, however i stopped using them as it lead to urine infections, etc. better to use ultra thin pads like always or personelle.
