I love my kirby. I have heard that rainbows are difficult to clean, and difficult to maintain, and that they smell funny. My kirby came with everything I could possibly ever want on a vacuum cleaner, from a carpet shampooer to an attachment to put in lightbulbs, and it was still cheaper than I would have paid for a rainbow. :)

Kirby for sure. I worked for both companies. Rainbow is a joke...stick with Kirby - it is hands down the best vacuum out there. I don't work for either company anymore and I have nothing to gain from either, so please believe me. Plus, Kirby is cheaper. BTW, if you are buying a Kirby, just pretend you don't want it. Instead of paying $1600 for it, you can get it for as little as $900. Really, no lie! If the first sales person won't do that for you call for another one. There is a high turnover rate for sales people and they are desperate for sales. The mark up on a Kirby is extensive as you might imagine, so you force them to give you back a little. NEVER pay full price for a Kirby...there is always someone who will give it to you cheaper. You can also get new ones on Ebay from what I remember, but the shipping might get you. Good luck :)
ps..
They compensate for the weight now with a motor that pushes the back wheels, so you barely have to push. I had a 4 year old vacuum during a demonstration and she didn't want to give it back!! lol And please don't listen to anyone who tells you that it's just hype. Kirby picks up more than any other vacuum. No joke. It's REALLY good.

I wouldn't suggest either...I would never own a Rainbow...heard lots of bad stuff about water getting into the motor. Kirby's pick up well, but they're so stinkin HEAVY!!! I actually bought an Electrolux and it is FABULOUS!!! It picks up anything (even paper clips!!). I own a cleaning business and use the Electrolux 4 times a day on average...more on weekends when I have commercial jobs. Even with all the hours of use, it's never given me one problem...I've had it over a year now and there hasn't been one day it hasn't been in use! The one good thing about an Electrolux is that the dirt goes directly into the bag and the entire motor is blocked from dirt and dust. My Grandfather sold them way back in the 40's and still has it...it still works too!! They're also sooooo much lighter than the others! And, you have your choice of a canister or an upright...it's nice to have choices these days. I wish you luck with your purchase!! ~Kendra Leigh

Don't believe advertising hype. Any vacuum cleaner will be able to get more dirt out of a carpet after any other vacuum cleaner runs over it. It is impossible to get all of the dirt out of a carpet in the amount of time most people will spend passing it back and forth. If you are satisfied with the cleaning your rainbow does keep it. The only reason to get a replacement is if a vacuum breaks or you are not satisfied with it.

I have my own interior design business and I keep a Kirby in the truck to clean up when I'm done. (I learned a long time ago not to depend on my clients owning a good vacuum.) The Kirby is indestructible and hasn't let me down yet.

I vote with the Kirby (despite the high cost.)
But I haven't tried a Dyson.
