Myrtle Beach, SC. Relatively inexpensive for a beachfront community.

I would say Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in the area of Grande Dunes. It's a very pretty upper middle class area with little crime and beautiful quiet beachs. Homes are expensive in some parts of Grande Dunes, some of the communites are gated with homes selling in the millions. You could get a 3 bedroom house for maybe something like $400,000, and on the ocean, maybe $800,000. It's never cheap buying a house near the ocean, but Myrtle Beach has better prices than other Beach destinations.
I don't reccomend the downtown area of Myrtle Beach/Pavilion area. It's not the best area in that part of town.

Without a doubt, St. Pete Beach, Florida would have to be my 1st choice. Treasure Island, Florida just to the immediate north would be second.
Go to http://www.tampabaybeaches.com/ to review some of them in Pinellas County on the Gulf Coast. Keep in mind that Ft. DeSoto, which is also in Pinellas County was ranked the #1 beach in the U.S. last year, Hawaii included! Caladasi Island is also in Pinellas County and is almost always in the top 10!

I don't know about living there but some of the prettiest beaches I've seen in the the contiguous 48 states would have to be in the Florida panhandle.

Southport NC is great. Right now there is not a lot of "commerical" stuff going on and it is a nice little seaside town. I love to visit there.

Very pretty and is now built up - which I like. You won't be bored.
