Cats are less noisome and destructive than dogs.
Even kittens barely do a fraction of the destruction on your household property that puppies too. Puppies feel the need to chew on everything - and pretty expensive stuff at that: shoes, books, slippers, etc. Not to mention socks and so forth.
Dogs bark a lot at night. Cats either sleep or stand silent sentry duty by the window. Of course, they won't alert you to the approach of a lurking burglar - unless it happens to be another cast.
Dogs need more exercise and more one-on-one playtime than cats. Dogs also really hate to be left alone. Cats are not thrilled with it either, however they are more individualist animals than dogs. Dogs are "pack" animals and are very social.
Cats you cannot walk on a leash - it is almost impossible.
Dogs you need to walk on a leash - it is not just possible but necessary, if you do not have a yard for them to romp around in. People need to take walks too, so it is not necessarily an extra chore on your part. However, if you travel a lot on business or long vacations - that might be extra hard on your dog.
People have some concern that cats will jump up in a crib a baby is sleeping on. Babies are warm and cats probably like that. I am not an expert, so I do not know if cats do that at all, how often they do it, how much of a problem it can cause, or what types of problems it causes.
You might inquire with a local vet what pets they recommend, after describing your living situation, household accountraments, and if you have or might have babies under your roof in the next fifteen years or so.
Vets probably learn a lot about what make good pets for different situations in school. Plus, you have to figure they hear of all kinds of crazy things - and frequently done things - that certain species/breeds of pets do.
If a vet gives you a helpful answer, they could put themselves in the running for being your new pet's doctor once you bring them home. After all, there are shots and sometimes little procedures that certain breeds need when you get them.

I prefer Cats because you don't have to take them for walks and they can use a litter box, and they can be trained just like dogs can be, if you don't believe that then you need to go see the show at Sea World, they even have trained rats. My cats are very affectionate and very clean. They don't Bark all night long and keep the neighbors awake as dogs do. And they unlike dogs aren't always on the wrong side of the door.

When considering the temperament of the "parents" of the cat or dog...there is a lot of difference. Dog people like to be the centers of attention for their animal children. They like to be the Alpha males or females for their canine children. Cat people like the occassional affection of their feline children. Cat people often are aloof and mysterious...I know...I have been a cat person all my life!

Dogs don't take a dump in the litter box, start pushing that turd around, and finally jump on your table or anywhere else where food would normally be placed.
Dogs don't make you house smell like a litter box.
You never heard of a crazy dog lady did you?

Dogs are for people who are more playful and athletic and who like to go outside. Cats are for lazy people who like to nap and don't mind being controlled by their furry little self-cleaning friend.
