During a Cavendish experiment, after oscillating stops, do the small masses touch the large masses?

Basically, when the system stops moving, do all the masses remain in contact due to the gravitational attraction or is there some space between the masses when they stop?

They mustn't touch. Your just shifting the oscillation center a bit with gravity.
