My favourite example is of Native residential schools set up by governments and carried out by the Church. Native children were beaten for observing traditional Native culture or speaking their Native languages. They encouraged shame and disgust amongst Native people for being Native. Yes. And not just because of the gold or because of the power, conquest and all that.

Bishop Diego de Landa had most ancient maya books destroyed because he thought it was the work of the devil.

Many other native american cultures suffered the same destruction because the conquerors never thought of trying to understand native culture instead of just blatantly replacing it with their own.

That closure of mind was originated by many sins, such as excessive religious fanatism, lust of power, etc.

the mound builders of the mid-west had an advanced culture, but it was destroyed by white settlers and not taught in schools.

not hardly...both aztecan & mayan civilizations have numerous sites featuring monumental architecture, complete with written glyphs that have been (and still are being) translated.

non-material mayan (especially) culture is spread throughout the Chiapan and Yucatecan states of Mexico and flourishes in Guatemala.

Uh, yeah. Pretty much. I don't think it was quite as systematic, but it came pretty close to it.
