I was taking 150 mg just fine, but after three days of doubling my dose (per my neurologist's instructions) I went into seizures, tremors, and head banging in the emergency room. Don't the doctors know better? It was Wellbutrin XL.

Whoever just said that prescribers GUESS at doses is an idiot.

Prescribers use information from the manufacturer called a package insert (here's Wellbutrin XL's http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_wellbutrinXL.pdf), studies published in reputable journals, reference books, and their own clinical experience when choosing a dose for a patient.

300mg is the normal daily dose of Wellbutrin XL. It is unfortunate that you had a seizure while using this product. Only a very small number of patients have this happen, and for most all patients... the small risk of seizures is well worth all of the potential benefits that they could get from the drug in treating depression, anxiety, and to stop smoking. The manufacturer of Wellbutrin has all sorts of warnings in their package insert about the risk of seizures, and plainly states that the product should be used very carefully in patients that have a history of seizure disorders... basically for these patients with a seizure history to try alternative treatments first.

Because you had a seizure with Wellbutrin, you should not try it again. Luckily, there are many other drugs out there that you can try instead.

It sounds like your neurologist was doing just what he/she should of... starting you with a low 150mg dose for a few days (usually 3, sometimes 7) and then tapering up to the normal dose of 300mg daily. The tapering up is done to minimize size effects experienced.

Keep in mind, everyone reacts to drugs differently.
For example I have very low tolerance to antihistamines that make people sleep as well as pain killers that make me sleep, I am out within 20 minutes or less when they don't even phase some people.

if your doctor knew that 300 mg of Wellbutrin was going to do that to you he wouldn't have prescribed it. Now you know not to take it. You just have a low tolerance to that particular drug.

Doctors DON't know - they GUESS at dosages...it's up to you to ease off if you feel unwell from your meds...you are in charge of your well-being.....
Drs. rely on your feedback to know what to do next...
