I remember quite well. I was in 5th grade, not into music at all (unless you count Weird Al Yankovic, Aqua and the original Broadway cast recording of Rent as serious music. Yes, I did suck back then.) and had recently gotten into the whole concept of the "Paul Is Dead" hoax that the Beatles placed throughout their records, though I had not heard a single song by the Beatles before that point (at least, not knowingly; I had found out about the hoax through a link from a South Park backmasking page.) Anyways, for what at the time was purely for "anthropological" reasons, I decided when I was in the music section of the Chapters (Canadian equivalent of Barnes & Nobles) on Yonge St. to buy both Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour. I remember initially being scared to play the CDs because I knew that John Lennon was dead (the only Beatle at least confirmed as dead at that time ;)) and as such, was worried as to what a dead man's voice would sound like. I was a silly kid. I forget which record I listened to first, I think it was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which I did like a lot, but it was the next day when I popped Magical Mystery Tour into the player and heard I Am The Walrus for the first time that I realized that music could be better than the filth that I heard coming out of the walkmen and boomboxes of my older schoolmates. These two albums, but mainly Magical Mystery Tour, are fully responsible for launching me into an obsession with music, though I didn't look for any other bands until I discovered Led Zeppelin in grade 8.
As for the other parts of the question, the first vinyl that I ever purchased was a copy of Magical Mystery Tour at the Beatlemania shop on Finch St. (has since moved to Peter St.) because I wanted a copy of the infamous 24-page booklet that wasn't reproduced on CD. I don't ever recall buying a cassette, but I found a copy of The Who's "Tommy" on 8-Track at my grandfather's house shortly after he died.

I distinctly remember the first CD I bought for myself when I was 13, it was Crash Test Dummies. Had some good songs on it. I don't own it anymore.
