I stopped caring about Grendel when she and her brother Hansel tossed the witch into her oven.

Nasty girl. I hope she got bloated from eating gingerbread.

I read it a little while ago, when i was taking Early British Literature and read "Beowulf" (Grendel is the monster in this early British epic poem). It's a really easy read. Definitely a little depressing, because you feel really bad for the monster. It's really cool to see the story from his side, though. If you want a really neat interpretation of the book and you want some background before you read it, get the cliff's notes or look up the summery for Beowulf. I think that would really help.

Goethe...with a name like that, you should be more literate. Hansel's sister was "Gretel".....nothing to do with the question under discussion here. Kate C. is spot on with her answer. If you haven't read Gardner, I recommend him.

Yes, it's great, but you won't get the full meaning of it if you are not totally familiar with Beowulf. The whole reading is great!

I really enjoyed it, the middle part gets very philosophical and strange, but all in all, I could heartily recommend this book to everyone.
