Soldiers acting on religious or national doctrine kill within groups of well armed trained people of similar belief. Many armies if not all have indoctrinated the children with the "right and good work" they are doing.

Both believe in a cause and risk lives to take lives. So what is the difference ?

That's an interesting question. I believe the fundamental difference is that a soldier is fighting to defend a cause or his country. Killing is a necessary byproduct--not something that is sought after.

A terrorist, on the other hand, acts with a motive to kill and destroy just because those whom he is attacking disagree with his point of view. Killing is a first line of offense, not a last resort.

Soldiers are members of organized armies. These armies are funded by governments, and accordingly, are constrained by rules and regulations. An army on the rampage (with no rules holding them back) sacks, pillages, rapes, and burns at will. Think "Vikings," or what the Germans and Russians did to each other in World War II. Terrorists are small bands of dedicated fighters who answer to no one but the people within their small cells. Think "I.R.A.." They have no uniforms and strike when least expected. Their main goal isn't projection of force, it's disruption of the society against which they are fighting. While soldiers tend to be professionals who are supposed to combat other soldiers, terrorists consider all people legitimate targets. Charles Taylors' army in Liberia is a good example of "soldiers' who were really terrorists.

Terrorists main objective is to gain support by destroying enemy civilian targets and generally making the public feel that they are doing the right thing by slaughtering civilians. Soldiers generally only kill enemy combatants.

Terrorists strike unanounced and kill large groups of innocent people and commit acts such as hijacking and suicide bombing. Soldiers, at least recently, have only attacked after negotiations have failed, and fight with weapons intended to kill only specific targets.

a soldier wears a uniform, carries ID that shows he's a soldier, the easiest way to spot a terrorist is to look behind the women and children he's hiding behind

I would say soldiers, ideally, try not to hurt innocent civilians where terrorists aim to do so. Others would say their budget.

you will no longer be able to examine a guy to a woman. each is different. yet a guy, and a woman, supplement one yet another. In different words, one guy and one woman (mutually) is one unit. they seem to be a complementary pair.
