Jumbo's
7501 NW 7th Ave
Miami, FL 33150

When middle-of-the-night munchies strike, this popular, informal 24-hour soul-food joint is exactly where you want to be. The surrounding neighborhood is a little dicey (a few darkened warehouses and some seriously substance-influenced streetfolk), but Jumbo's and its large parking lot are brightly lit so you can watch your car through the cheery place's panoramic windows -- if you remember. But after one bite of Jumbo's shrimp, you'll forget all else. The plump shellfish are split, lightly breaded, and then precision-fried -- irresistible. On a full menu of other diner-type specials, two other must-not-miss dishes are very tender fried conch (when less skillfully prepared, conch is like eating rubber bands) and fried chicken wings. There's no such thing as whole chickens at Jumbo's, just wings and drumsticks, but the meaty wings are leg-sized. Supreme side (all entrées come with two) is the fresh, crisp coleslaw, a great grease cutter. And since no alcohol is served, wash it all down with a flop, half iced tea and half lemonade, with enough sugar kick to keep you awake a few hours for Jumbo's fabulous (and fabulously priced) breakfast specials.

People's Bar-B-Que and Soul Food 360 NW Eighth St., Miami. 305-373-8080.
The Overtown restaurant, a Miami institution, serves slow-grilled pork, chicken and beef, as well as fish, turkey, souse and all the requisite sides.

Most people, at least the ones I'd want to associate with on a regular basis, have a fondness for what's commonly known as barbecue (or barbeque, bar-b-q, bar-b-que). We'll define that as beef, pork or chicken, slow-grilled (preferably over hard wood or other aromatic kindling), though numerous variants, such as barbecued shrimp are allowed.

But what passes for barbecue locally is a mixed bag. Far too many joints in this town take a perfectly good slab of pork ribs, give 'em a quick dunk in some hot liquid, slather the parboiled pig parts in a sweet, bottled sauce, then bake or throw them on a hot grill. Some may even truly barbecue the meat with oak or hickory, which is a long, slow process, then heat it up when the server presents your order to the kitchen. It's easy to understand their compulsion toward precooking. But that doesn't make it right -- or actual barbecue.

Fortunately, there are a few places that keep the fires burning -- slowly -- and serve the genuine article on a regular basis.

Though their ribs are my favorites, I chose collard greens and pigeon peas and rice as side dishes, People's does a fine job with smothered pork chops, and also offers meatloaf, baked ham, T-bone steak and other delights depending on the day, date, time and availability. Nice conch salad, too, and a friend of mine swears by their macaroni and cheese. They also feature a variety of desserts, but I've always been too full to proceed!

havent tried this one, but other people have mentioned it to me.

Only soul food resturant that was ever fit to eat was Bob the Chef's in Boston. Long gone now. I have traveled everywhere and this was it. Sometimes you can get one thing that is good on that day somewhere else, but without Bob's, there is nothing in the U.S.:::: Much less Miami. In Miami just find a good jewish deli and you'll be in heaven.
