I use Symantec AntiVirus for viruses.

I also use Spyware Blaster from JavaCool Software to prevent Spyware from being installed:

Finally, I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser, as it seems to be less vulnerable to spyware attacks on malicious websites:

Spyware Blaster and Firefox are free programs, so you can use them on as many computers as you want. Symantec Anti-Virus costs money, as you know, and I'm not sure if their license agreement allows it to be used on all your computers. If you want a free anti-virus program, try AVG:

Dont use either, they both or major resource hogs (use a bunch of memory) and their detection rate is mediocre at best. If you want something free use AVG Free Edition, it is lighter on resources and does a better job, and is free. If you want to pay use NOD32, this Antivirus was written almost entirely in assembly language, which means it is ultra light on resources and scans VERY fast. That ismy recommendation.

Go with Windows Live One Care's 90 day trial,if your XP is"Genuine", get Windows Defender also! I've used it and have no problems The tune-up get rid of unwanted files, defrags, virus scans, back's up files, and checks for updates all in one. I already went to Fry's and paid $20 to upgrade. No problems like I hear about all the others.
I've heard about AVG, but what are you really getting for free?

Norton will protect you throughout the year if you set it up to automatically update your system.
